Tommy X Lady litter had to have there tails and dewclaws done today. I often get asked by my kids dad why are you taking that puppies tail off? They feel like I’m hurting the puppy. Each time we doc tails I have to remind them that we do it to help protect the puppy for when he gets older and goes to the field. If u hunt a dog with a long tail in the heavy brush or snow for a few days there tail starts to get sore and bleed. The hair gets rubbed off and the skin gets wore until the tail becomes raw. I once saw an English Pointer with a short tail because his tail got frost bite. I remind my kids that it only hurts the baby puppy for a few seconds now and makes there hunting life so much better when they get older. So people call it preventive maintenance.
